About This Spot

Stepping into Second District Brewing feels like discovering a favorite neighborhood retreat where the rhythm of Philadelphia’s South Bancroft Street settles into a comfortably steady beat. The space hums with a welcoming warmth — a mix of low-key chatter, the clink of glasses, and the inviting glow of amber light spilling over rustic wood accents. Whether it’s a lazy midweek afternoon or an evening gathering, the mood invites guests to slow down and savor the moment alongside a thoughtfully crafted beer.

This is a place where the ever-changing beer lineup pulls you in like an old friend, promising familiar favorites alongside new adventures in flavor. There’s an easy-going charm to trying a flight here — each pour offering a story to sip and muse over, from hazy IPAs to smooth pales. The balance between rich malt and hop-driven brightness feels like it was made to match the unhurried pace of good company and engaging conversation.

Food here flows naturally into the experience, never feeling like an afterthought. Whether it’s the satisfying heft of a smash burger or the welcoming crunch of vegan banh mi-inspired bites, the kitchen strikes a harmonious chord with the brews. Small plates invite sharing and discovery — think crispy chicken pieces and hearty nachos that don’t distract but rather underscore the handcrafted drinks. The variety of options, from plant-based to indulgent, reflects a space mindful of different tastes but united by honest, grounded flavors.

Upstairs, the vibe flexes effortlessly for groups or gatherings, where laughter spills over between cheers for local sports and casual celebrations. The bartenders and staff add a subtle thread of familiarity, nurturing a sense of belonging without fanfare. This is the kind of place where neighbors gather, stories unfold, and every visit feels like tuning into a comfortable, ongoing dialogue.

Second District Brewing isn’t about flashy moments but about the nuanced pleasures of connection — between people, place, and the simple joys of a well-poured pint shared alongside good food in a setting that feels like it truly belongs to the community.

Since before the pandemic, I always wanted to visit this place. I guess I had high expectations over the last 4 years. I finally visited Second District one midweek afternoon and totally surprised how each beer I consumed was better than the previous one. Started out with the Ostentatious Observer, Hazy boi IPA, followed by the Bancroft pale ale. All were 16 oz. and both were amazing beers. Next was a Dark Matter Indicator, a smoked porter at 4.8% ABV, yet another amazing beer. Lastly, I ordered the Chadwick, 6% ABV, and the Bīru Bier, Japanese rice lager, which was very lite and really good. Ordered a Smashburger which was awesome and washed that down with the Pětite Pils, a very lite German pilsner. Overall, a very good afternoon.

What a fun and impressive brewery. Clearly an popular place and lots of activity. The decor is well done and welcoming. The various options for seating allows for big groups, solo seating at the bar and small tables for more intimate gatherings. The beer selection was good though our beers did not blow us away. The service and the food did though. One of the best burger ever. The curly fries were fantastic. The staff are friendly and service is fast despite being busy. There are a few outdoor tables. We found parking on the street was easy. The area felt safe and clean. We were impressed overall. Though the beer could have better it could be we just made the wrong choices. We would return again.

I had the Bancroft beer. It was a wonderful pale ale. Great mosaic flavour and really light alcohol for the amount of body and taste. Happy hour was very reasonably priced. I got the Smashburger, and as shown in the picture, it is a hamburger nicely dressed. I don’t think it’s quite fitting into the Smashburger category as Patty is just a bit too thick and not a ton of caramelization from the actual smashing I would totally try this place again especially happy hour. The bathroom is really nice and they did have a spot that they’re obviously letting people do the graffiti on which is the door so that people don’t tag up the walls.

Good beer, sometimes they have sours but they have a big selection, something for everyone. Chill vibe. Food has been good. Only thing is PLEASE BRING BACK THE CHICKEN STRIPS! they were the best thing on the menu. The wings don’t hit like the strips did. Especially with that honey dipping sauce yall had. But everything else is great!

One of the best bars in the city. Low key, chill vibes - basic, hit the spot food that pairs well with their always delicious, ever changing beer menu. Get a Bancroft if you've never been and stay a awhile. Upstairs room if you need a big group accomidated or small event, fun for happy hour and Eagles and Phillies. Alex and the other bartenders are great. We've been regulars five years and appreciate its commitment to authentic beer and always being kind good humans.

Really solid brewery. We came here for a midday drink to do some work on a Sunday and it was super quiet. The space itself isn't huge but there are plenty of tables and table options. Bathroom area is quite large. The draft menu is fine, always on the hunt for IPAs and the 6 feet below was much better than the hazy IPA (the latter of which I didn't care for). Service was incredibly friendly and attentive. Easy parking nearby and overall a very accessible experience. We didn't order food but those that did smelled tasty. I don't know that I would specifically come back for the beer but if you're looking for a place to hang out it's definitely a great option.

We visited Second District after getting Pho nearby and grabbing beers at another stop as well. What an awesome nightcap! There was a brief wait but we got seated quickly. The vibes inside were energetic and positive - a great atmosphere for beers and snacks. Tried out the hot dog and chili fries, both of which were very good (although I'd recommend Second District consider a less salty hot dog/condiments.) Beers were exceptional all around, and I'd definitely come back to get something to take home too. Highly recommend!
